hello tine, thanks for your comment,
as i know, Ketambe is a part of Mount Leuser national Park location at border medan (north sumatera)- aceh (NAD). In this place we can find orang utan rehabilitation center.
to visit this place you can travell form Medan the to Kutacane (aceh) about 8hour by car, then to ketambe about 35 km.
I hear Ketambe is heaps better than Bukit Lawang. If you want a zoo like experience, then do Bukit Lawang. But if you want the real thing, a rain forest as good as anywhere in the world, then you should do Ketambe.
Best of luck with the traveling.

Hi,
Both places are great in their own way namely Bukit Lawang and Ketambe.
Bukit Lawang is great from a very social point of view, lots of restaurants there now- up the side of the river is now where all the action is, great people there, you can go jungle trekking and maybe see orangutans- not always but probably more chances to see them than in Ketambe.
Ketambe is so much more remote- only have electricity in the evening and although it is becoming more traveller orientated it is much less so than BL.
Another great place to visit up the road (3hrs)just outside Blangkejeren is Kedah- now that is the place for great trekking and very rough living- a real adventure experience- have not done it myself. but have had reports from travellers there.
Read this report on a Kedah adventure.
